But have you ever considered the actual cost of producing these Air Jordan 1 sneakers for which we are willing to pay hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars?
According to @resellingsecrets, it costs only $16.25 USD to manufacture an Air Jordan 1 sneaker. The entire costs are as follows: labour costs $2.43, overhead costs $2.10, materials costs $10.75, and manufacturing profit is $0.97. Yet, the brand charges about ten times that amount for a single pair, and the price is rising nearly annually.
Of course, the huge markup is nothing new in business. The same is true for most of the items we buy these days, including electronics, cars, and yes, even most sneakers.
As many of us are already aware, the cost of producing a product is usually far less than the price we pay for it. However, brand recognition and hype play a significant role in driving up the cost of items, especially in the case of Air Jordan 1 sneakers.
So, while it may be easy to see a figure like $16.25 and wonder why we are forced to pay such a significant markup on items we purchase, we need to remember that we, as consumers, ultimately drive the demand and willingness to pay for these products at higher costs. Our choices and preferences are what shape the market and, yes, even this absurd pricing. Of course, there are also marketing, advertising, and other costs that shouldn’t be left out of this complex equation.
Still, at the end of the day, we decide where we spend our money and what goods we are prepared to pay more for. Jordan Brand just happens to be one of the many companies that have successfully capitalised on consumers’ desire for their products.
